To All of Our Neighbors:

Well, we made it through another Summer! With the heat hopefully behind us, the Committees are busy planning events for the fall. Neighborhood Watch is looking for volunteers to help with this year’s National Night Out celebration. Last year’s event was a huge success and we are hoping this year’s event will be even bigger. If you are interested in helping out, contact the Neighborhood Watch team at Waterleafneighborhoodwatch@gmail.com.

With the kids returning to school, remember to watch out for little ones walking to and from the bus stop. The posted speed limit in the neighborhood is 30 M.P.H. Let’s keep our neighborhood safe by obeying the posted traffic signs and watching our speed.

We have had issues with pets getting loose in the neighborhood lately. Please keep in mind that both the city of Kyle and the HOA have requirements regarding proper restraint of your animals when outside of your property. The HOA encourages all residents to contact the city of Kyle Animal Control Department if you see any loose animals in the neighborhood.

One last reminder… All architectural changes to your property must be approved by the Architectural Committee BEFORE any changes are made. Any changes made without approval are subject to fines as outlined by the HOA fine policy.

And as always be safe and courteous to your fellow neighbors. We hope to see you at all of our events!

David, Tracy, Jason, Darla, and Megan

National Night Out 2015

SaveDateCarnival_Color

National Night Out is a great opportunity for citizens and law enforcement to partner up against crime. We invite you to attend the event, meet your neighbors and commit to helping law enforcement reduce crime in your community.

National Night Out is designed to:

1 Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness

2 Generate support and participation in crime efforts

3 Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community relations

4 Let criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back

During the event, residents in neighborhoods throughout Texas are asked to turn on their porch lights, lock their doors and spend the evening outside with their neighbors, police officers, firefighters and EMS paramedics. Events such as cookouts, block parties and neighborhood walks will all occur simultaneously throughout the city and statewide.

Join Waterleaf and your Neighborhood Watch as we celebrate with an Old Time Carnival and Magic Show!

Volunteers still needed!!! Please join in and let us know what you would like to do!

We need: Carnival Game set-up, Food set-up, prep and servers, Game attendants, Clean-up Crew.

We do appreciate any donations neighbors could contribute for both the carnival game prizes (anything from candy to simple little tokens) and also prizes for a raffle. Raffle items can also be donated by your employers or your own business (gift certificates, gift cards, homemade desserts, use your imagination!) So far, a few we have received are a No Soliciting sign, 2 restaurant gift cards, and a BBQ apron.

Contact Neighborhood Watch if you can help us, we truly appreciate all volunteers! Email us if you can help in any way at Waterleafneighborhoodwatch@gmail.com

Pool Closing September 27th

poolclosedThe Waterleaf Community pool will be closing for the 2015 season on Sunday, September 27th.

For the month of September, our regular pool hours will remain in place, however, lifeguards will only be on duty on the weekends.

Please exercise caution when swimming without guards present. Parents, remember to stay within arms reach of your child(ren) to prevent any accidents that could occur.

Thank you for another great pool season, we look forward to next year!

Halloween for ALL!

Hard to believe October is just around the corner! As you begin to prepare for Halloween, we’d like to remind you about two wonderful programs that have helped make Halloween more inclusive for everyone. Mommies of Miracles Trick-or-Treat Project and the Teal Pumpkin both ask you to add non-food treats to your shopping list for trick-or-treaters. There are a number of reasons that a child might not be able to eat candy (food allergies, dietary restrictions, feeding tubes, diabetes, etc), but that does not mean they should sit out during all the fun of the season.

PumpkinIt is important to understand that neither program is asking you to ditch the candy, but simply asking that you add non-edible gifts when passing out treats on Halloween. Gifts can be as simple as stickers, pencils, glow bracelets, bubbles, crayons, the list is endless! If you are participating in the Trick-or-treat Project or the Teal Pumpkin, you can easily let neighbors know by printing out the pumpkin decal at mommiesofmiracles.com or by placing a teal painted pumpkin outside your door. This will let families know non-food options are available at your home. Trick-or-treaters may also wear a small sticker with the pumpkin decal to let people know they would like a non-food treat instead.

The-Teal-Pumpkin-Project-2

Participation in our neighborhood for both of these programs has grown immensely in the past couple of years and we have repeatedly had a number of parents reach out and say how much they appreciate participation and how much it meant to their child to truly be able to enjoy the evening.

Thank you for making a difference, Waterleaf!

Social Activities for Special Needs

In the spirit of inclusion, your Waterleaf Social Committee would like to start planning more events to include our Waterleaf neighbors who have children with special needs. The Social Committee would like to include special time before an event to help those with sensory concerns and to allow more one-on-one time for those who need a little extra help. Families will be more than welcome to stay for the entire event, but having a special allotted time beforehand will ensure that ALL residents have an opportunity to participate in our great events.

If you would be interested in seeing more events planned in this manner, please email the Social Committee at waterleafsocial@gmail.com – if there is enough interest, the Social Committee will be sure to plan accordingly for future events. Also, if you would be interested in helping with events for our differently abled neighbors, please let us know!

Hands-Free Ordinances Along the IH-35 Corridor

New Braunfels is the latest city along the IH35 Corridor from Austin to San Antonio to adopt a hands-free ordinance. The ordinance passed on August 11th and will take effect on November 1st.

Austin, Buda, San Marcos, New Braunfels and San Antonio now all prohibit the use of cell phones, tablets, GPS devices, cameras, gaming devices, mobile music players, computers and any other electronic device while operating a motor vehicle. Fines for violating the hands free law can range anywhere from $100 – $500.

While Kyle is not yet on the list of cities adopting a hands-free ordinance, it is only a matter of time before a law is proposed and passed in our town. Please exercise caution when driving and put down your devices. Your safety and that of those around you is not worth any call or text.

//Editorial Comment//

After the printing of this month’s newsletter, the Kyle City Council voted on September 1, 2015 to enact a hands-free ordinance in Kyle. The ordinance is EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY and includes a grace period until November 1st. Until November 1st, KPD will issue warnings. More details will be released soon. Follow the City of Kyle on Facebook and visit the website for more information.

October 2014 Newsletter

For the PDF Version of this newsletter, click here: Community Newsletter October 2014

To All of Our Neighbors,

As the pool season closes, the Holiday season begins. We look forward to the scary and creepy decorations for Halloween. October’s yard of the month will be awarded for the best Halloween decorations with a $50.00 Lowe’s gift card as the prize! So, get those goblins, ghouls, and ghosts out of storage and create a haunted house, a scary cemetery, or whatever your imagination dreams up.

Halloween looks to be a wonderful night of ghosts, super heroes and princessess. The little ones will be dressed ready for tricks or treats (they prefer treats). Please remember safety when driving through the neighborhood, and parents please keep an eye out for cars. If some would rather sit in their driveway to pass out treats rather than in their house, please feel welcome to do so. If you do not wish to partake in the festivities, please turn off your porch light (sorry neighborhood watch, but this is the one time we ask people to turn off their porch lights).

Neighborhood Watch will be sponsoring National Night Out on Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at 6:30pm, please see article inside this newsletter. National Night Out is about getting out and meeting your neighbors, come to the park and meet your neighbors, enjoy some food, play in a bouncy house, and see the fire trucks.

Hopefully by the time you receive this newsletter, the new marquee signs will have been installed at the 3 entrances. We will have committee meeting dates and other important events posted on the marquee signs. A big thank you to Larry Simone for the design. Also at the entrances and around the neighborhood, you will see the Neighborhood Watch signs. Neighborhood Watch is working hard to get the network up and running to help ensure our community is safe for all of our neighbors.

Halloween

Trick-or-Treat Do’s and Don’ts!

DO:

  • Give neighbors plenty of time to get home and get ready. 6:30 is usually a good start time
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Watch for cars and look both ways before you cross the street.
  • Carry a flashlight to guide your way as it gets darker.
  • Use your manners! Say thank you after someone gives you your treat.
  • Drivers: DRIVE SLOW!! Watch out for little ghouls, goblins, princesses, and superheroes!
  • Turn your porch light OFF if you do not wish to participate in the festivities.

DON’T:

  • Go to houses where the porch light is off. This signifies that the person is not home or not participating this year. Please be respectful.
  • Knock or ring the doorbell over and over. Give the person time to answer the door. They may have also forgotten to turn off their light.
  • Make a mess in your neighbor’s yards. Be mindful of decorations and don’t leave candy wrappers on the ground.
  • Stay out too late!

Let’s have a safe and Happy Halloween!

The Trick-or Treat Project

PumpkinAs you prepare for Halloween, take in to consideration young Waterleaf residents who have special healthcare needs. Some children are not usually able to participate in trick-or- treating due to dietary restrictions, health conditions, or the inability to eat anything by mouth requiring all nutrition to go through a feeding tube. The Trick-Or-Treat Project aims to make Halloween fun available to ALL kids so these children can finally join their peers in this age old tradition.

Participation is simple. Include non-food items with your Halloween treats! No need to give up candy altogether, but include pencils, stickers, small toys, and other special items so all children can particpate. To learn more and print out special decals to show your participation this year, visit mommiesofmiracles.com/halloween/

Families with children who have special needs can also visit the site to print off labels to easily identify your children to the homes who decide to participate. Look for this pumpkin as you trick-or-treat this year!

logo-green-large

We are excited to announce that the Kyle Police Department will be working with Nextdoor to provide crime and safety information to neighborhoods across the city. As part of this effort, you may see periodic updates from the police department on Nextdoor Waterleaf. The purpose of these updates is to share official alerts, news, and other notifications that are relevant to your neighborhood. It’s important to note that police staff can only see their own posts and replies to these posts. They will NOT be able to access or view any information that you and your neighbors have shared on Nextdoor Waterleaf.

Communicating with police staff is entirely voluntary, and you can see more information here. Please visit our Help Center if you have any questions.
